Reading is Good For You (Curated Post)

Child Reading

Reading is not only a hobby that keeps you entertained, it actually has many benefits that can change the way you live. In an article titled Benefits of Reading Books: How It Can Positively Affect Your Life by Healthline, Rebecca Joy Stanborough explains how reading can change your life for the better. She states that reading strengthens your brain, increases your ability to empathize, builds your vocabulary, helps prevent age-related cognitive decline, reduces stress, prepares you for a good night’s rest, helps alleviate depression symptoms, and might even help you live longer. This article is mentions many different studies completed by researchers that prove each of these benefits to be true.

Using MRI scans, researchers have confirmed that reading involves a complex network of circuits and signals in the brain. As your reading ability matures, those networks also get stronger and more sophisticated.

In my opinion, reading is one of the most beneficial hobbies you can pick up to live a healthier lifestyle. Incorporating reading into my every day routine has not only helped improve my focus in school, it has improved my mental health significantly. After a long stressful day, reading before bed rather than going on my phone or watching a television series has helped me sleep better. It’s important to let our minds rest from the technology that we are always surrounded by. I believe in the importance of being well-read. Reading is also a conversation starter -- when you’ve read a book that’s a classic, you can have an ongoing discussion with a group of people who have also read that book. Everyone should read at least 10 pages a day, no matter what the genre of reading be.
